161. The Benefit of Change

I tell myself and others
I'm just too set in my ways
They say that I can change
and live life free these later days

But what of the excuses
that have kept me safe from fault?
The comfort of my failures
that brought dreaming to a halt?

For how would I then manage
with no designated foes?
No “them” or “they” oppressors
I can blame for all my woes

These tried and true beliefs
are like my friends I love and know
They comfort me by telling me
“That's just the way things go.”

But have I crafted for myself
a world of my own choice?
Are all the fears and pain I know
just echoes of MY voice?

I need to see the benefits first
before I let it go
Perhaps this final verse reveals
the words I need to grow:

Don't ask to see the benefit
as if incentive, bribe or fee
The benefit is you now can choose
the way you wish your world to be!

The benefit of change is not something you search for to justify the decision to change. The benefit of change is that by changing you get to create the world of your choice.
